Check this website out! www.verbalworkout.com Verbalworkout.com helps teachers reinforce the vocabulary their students naturally learn while reading. It does this in a simple manner that does not detract from other lessons surrounding literature.
Suggested use: Prior to reading a book, have students do a pre-reading quiz. The quiz presents targeted words used in instructive sentences. This is a completion assignment. Students cannot advance to the next question until they successfully type the correct word. The assignment will increase word consciousness and aid comprehension during reading. Students should print the result sheet to give their teacher. Read the book with any lesson plans or assignments normally associated with the reading. After reading the book, have students do a post-reading quiz. This asks for identification of the vocabulary highlighted in the pre-reading quiz, but this time the quiz is based on sentences pulled from the book. This quiz can be given as a completion assignment (as above) or as a graded test. Students should print the result sheet to give their teacher.
